Richard Kay

Business Manager

Leading the team and supporting the hospital behind the scenes

Richard supports the daily operations at Casey and Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital. He works closely with the team to make sure they have the tools, time and guidance they need to do their best work.

He takes genuine pride in watching people grow, and he enjoys seeing staff step into their strengths and build confidence in their roles. Helping others reach their potential is the part of the job he finds most rewarding.

An unexpected path into veterinary care

Richard studied engineering at university and spent most of his early career working in that field. His interest in the natural world grew while he worked as a PADI and SSI Dive Instructor in Egypt and Malaysia. In 2007, he moved to Australia to continue his engineering career. Everything changed when he met Dr Leanne and her pets. It was the moment he realised that true job satisfaction comes from helping those who cannot help themselves. His role today allows him to honour that promise.

With experience across business management, commerce and industry, Richard brings a practical mindset to the hospital. He has a deep respect for the veterinary profession and often says he learns something new every day. He enjoys listening to vets explain complex cases and is constantly impressed by their ability to think several steps ahead.

“The people at this hospital amaze me. Their dedication and selfless work are what make this place exceptional.”

Moments that matter

Richard is inspired by the dedication he sees in the team. One night in September 2020 stands out clearly in his mind. A patient presented after consuming snail bait. Three vets and two nurses worked tirelessly well past closing time to save the animal. No one left until the patient was stable. There were no complaints and no attention seeking. It was a simple act of commitment and care that filled him with pride. He believes this quiet determination is at the heart of Casey and Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital.

Life outside the clinic

Outside of work, Richard enjoys swimming, cycling and running. He shares his home with Charlie Angel and Dudley Devil, who keep life entertaining. He has a soft spot for Goldies and enjoys being active, especially when it helps him strike a balance in his busy role.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring any previous vet records, current medications and notes about your pet’s diet, behaviour or recent changes.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

Yes. We reserve a number of same day consultations for urgent concerns. Please call early so we can help you as soon as possible.

Can I get repeat medications?

Yes. Repeat prescriptions can be requested by phoning the clinic. Some medications may require a check-up first to ensure they are still appropriate and safe for your pet.

Do you have in-house blood testing and imaging?

Yes. We offer full blood testing onsite, along with X ray and ultrasound, plus access to mobile CT for more complex cases.

What if my pet has an emergency?

Call us straight away as you are making your way to the clinic, giving a brief description of the emergency so we can be prepared for your pet’s arrival. Depending on the emergency, in certain circumstances, we may direct you to the nearest 24 hour emergency centre.

How Long Are Your Consultations?

Our consults are longer than standard appointments. This gives us time to examine your pet carefully, talk through our findings and answer any questions without rushing.
