Advanced Medicine

Thorough Medicine, with Follow-Through

For complex and ongoing medical conditions

Some pets don’t arrive with a single, obvious problem. Instead, there’s a pattern that doesn’t quite add up – vomiting that keeps returning, weight loss without explanation, changes in appetite, coughing, drinking more than usual, or a general sense that something isn’t right.

These are often the moments where owners feel most uncertain. You know your pet isn’t themselves, but it’s hard to know what matters, what can wait, and what the next step should be.

Advanced medicine at Casey & Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital is used when cases require deeper investigation and ongoing management. We regularly support dogs and cats with complex medical conditions, including hormonal disease (such as Addison’s, Cushing’s, thyroid disease and diabetes), gastrointestinal disease, heart and respiratory conditions, immune-mediated disorders, seizures, urinary tract disease, and some cancers, including lymphoma.

Our focus is on understanding the whole picture and working carefully through the problem, rather than rushing to conclusions.

“At Casey and Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital, we believe good medicine is rarely rushed — it’s worked through carefully, step by step.”

Preparing for a medicine consult

Advanced medicine appointments work best when we can see the whole picture. Before your consultation, it’s helpful to bring any previous test results, medication lists, and a brief timeline of what you’ve noticed at home. Small details – changes in thirst, appetite, weight, toileting or energy, often provide important clues.

Assessment may involve blood and urine testing, and imaging such as X-rays or ultrasound when it will genuinely help clarify what’s happening internally.

If giving medication has been difficult in the past, let us know early. For some long-term conditions, medications can be compounded into palatable liquids or transdermal creams applied to the ear, where appropriate. The aim is always to create a plan that’s manageable day to day, not just medically sound.

Monitoring, adjustment and ongoing care

Many advanced medical conditions aren’t something that can simply be diagnosed once and forgotten. Ongoing care often involves regular blood or urine testing, treatment adjustments based on results, and in some cases repeat ultrasound to monitor how an organ or condition is changing over time.

We work as a team, with clear communication and follow-up systems in place so nothing quietly falls through the cracks. When advanced procedures such as CT, endoscopy or surgical intervention are required, we’ll discuss this openly and coordinate the next step. If referral is needed, we remain involved and support you before and after.

Quick Answers to Common Questions

What kinds of conditions do you manage under advanced medicine?

We commonly manage endocrine disease (including Addison’s, Cushing’s, thyroid disease and diabetes), chronic vomiting or diarrhoea, heart and respiratory conditions, seizures, immune-mediated disease, urinary tract disease, and some cancers such as lymphoma.

When should I book an advanced medicine consult?

Ongoing or unexplained signs such as increased drinking or urination, weight loss, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, coughing, exercise intolerance, changes in appetite, or collapse episodes are all good reasons to book.

Is chronic disease always difficult or expensive to manage?

Not always. Many conditions can be managed successfully with an accurate diagnosis, a clear plan and steady monitoring. We’ll explain the options available and help you prioritise what’s most important for your pet.

What if my pet won’t take tablets?

Depending on the medication, alternatives such as compounded liquids or transdermal creams may be available. We’ll work with you to find the most practical option.

Do you refer pets to specialists?

If specialist care is the best option, we’ll talk this through and coordinate the referral. We stay involved in your pet’s care and help manage follow-up once they return.
