Surgical Care You Can Feel Confident About

Surgery can be daunting, even when it’s planned. Our focus is on making the experience as calm and controlled as possible, for both you and your pet. We perform a wide range of surgeries in house, from routine procedures through to more complex abdominal and soft tissue operations.

Because our team handles these cases regularly, there is a steady rhythm to how surgery is approached. Nothing is rushed, and every step is thought through carefully. If a procedure is better managed by a specialist, we will always talk that through with you and guide you on next steps.

“Surgery is never treated as routine. Every decision is guided by safety, preparation and what’s best for your pet.”

Preparing Your Pet for Surgery

Before surgery, we provide clear instructions so you know exactly what to expect. Most pets are fasted overnight, with water left available. For pets that are prone to anxiety, especially brachycephalic breeds, we may recommend medication ahead of time to reduce stress and help keep them settled.

On the day, anxious or reactive pets are admitted close to their procedure time to minimise waiting and stimulation. In some cases, medication is given with you present, and your pet is taken straight through once it takes effect. These small adjustments help your pet feel calmer and better supported through their surgery.

Monitoring, Pain Relief and Recovery

Your pet is monitored closely throughout surgery, with a nurse dedicated to them the entire time. Heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels and blood pressure are watched continuously, with changes noted and managed as they occur. This allows surgery to proceed in a controlled, calm way.

Pain relief is planned before surgery begins and adjusted based on the procedure. Recovery is not rushed. Your pet is supported as they wake up, and you are contacted once they are settled to organise collection. After going home, a nurse will check in within a few days, and we encourage you to call earlier if anything doesn’t feel right.

Quick Answers to Common Questions

What types of surgery do you perform at your clinic?

We perform a wide range of soft tissue surgeries in-house, including desexing, lump removals, abdominal surgery, bladder surgery, eye procedures and wound repairs. If a procedure is better managed by a specialist, we will always talk that through with you.

How do you keep pets safe under anaesthetic?

Your pet is monitored continuously throughout surgery, with a nurse focused solely on them. Vital signs are watched closely so changes are picked up early and managed as they occur.

Will my pet be in pain after surgery?

Pain relief is planned ahead and adjusted to suit the type of surgery. Many owners are surprised by how comfortable their pet is once they are home, even after more involved procedures.

My pet gets very anxious. Can surgery still go ahead?

Yes. We regularly support anxious pets and adjust how the day is managed to reduce stress. Owners visiting us from Skye often appreciate that admission timing and handling can be adapted to suit their pet.

How long does recovery usually take?

Recovery varies depending on the surgery, but many pets settle quickly at home. We’ll explain what’s normal to expect and when to get in touch if something doesn’t feel right.

Do you see many surgical cases from Devon Meadows?

Yes. We regularly care for pets from Devon Meadows, including dogs and cats needing both planned and urgent surgery. Follow-up support and post-operative check-ins are part of that care.
