Dr Leanne Versteege

BVSc (Hons)
Clinical Director

Leading the clinical team with experience and compassion

Dr Leanne is the Clinical Director at Casey and Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital. Her days are a mix of her own medical and surgical cases, along with guiding and supporting the vets and nurses around her.

She oversees the clinical side of the hospital and ensures everything runs smoothly so every patient receives the care they need. With more than three decades in practice, she brings experience, calm judgement and a genuine belief in collaborative medicine.

A lifelong commitment to veterinary care

Dr Leanne knew she wanted to be a vet from the time she was eight years old, and thirty years later she still loves her work. Early in her career she spent eight years at a practice in the United Kingdom, where she gained extensive experience with pocket pets, especially rabbits. She developed a strong interest in rabbit dentistry and enjoys working through cases that many consider highly specialised.

Her interests also include endocrinology, especially Addison’s disease. She has refined the use of the low-dose Zycortal protocol and cares for many dogs who are referred to her for long-term management. Helping these patients thrive is one of the most rewarding parts of her job.

“Every patient deserves thoughtful, thorough care. That is what drives me every day.”

Moments that stay close to the heart

Dr Leanne has cared for countless patients, but one story continues to hold a special place in her life. Her dog George came into her life as a shy little rescue pup who slowly found his confidence. When he was six months old, she discovered he had congenital kidney failure. His time with her was short, but he changed the way she approached those complex cases. The experience pushed her to learn more about kidney disease and to look for better ways to support other dogs facing the same challenge. Her search for ways to give him the best possible life led her to explore new treatments for kidney disease, many of which she still uses today to support other dogs with the same condition. George’s legacy lives on through the care she provides to her patients.

A true team effort

The strength of Casey and Cranbourne Veterinary Hospital lies in its teamwork. With more than 150 years of combined veterinary experience, the team work closely together, shares their knowledge and steps in whenever help is needed. One night stands out in Dr Leanne’s mind. A dog arrived seizing after ingesting snail bait. Three vets and two nurses stayed well past closing time, performing gastric lavage and an enema to save the dog’s life. When the dog walked out of the hospital later that night, Dr Leanne felt immense pride. To her, this is what the team does every day: work quietly, reliably and with deep care for every animal that comes through the door.

Life outside the clinic

When she is not at the hospital, Dr Leanne enjoys triathlons, cycling and weekends away with Richard. Dr Leanne has two Golden Retrievers, Charlie (Angel) and Dudley (Devil), and she enjoys nothing more than walking and running with them on the beach. She thrives on an active lifestyle and loves spending time outdoors with her family.
