Samantha’s days at the clinic vary a lot. Some mornings start in surgery, preparing patients and keeping watch during their anaesthetic. Other times she is helping a vet with tests, placing a catheter or talking an owner through what is going on with their pet. She likes being involved in the practical work that keeps the hospital moving and enjoys the mix of skills her role uses.
She also teaches Puppy Pre School. It gives her a chance to work with young dogs and talk with owners in a relaxed setting. Seeing a shy puppy grow more confident over a few weeks is something she finds very satisfying.
Animals have always been part of Samantha’s life. She worked with racehorses when she was younger and spent time around equine vets, which gave her an early look into the veterinary world. Later, her love for dogs grew into breeding and showing, and this sparked a deeper interest in behaviour and how animals learn. Studying veterinary nursing brought these interests together and led her into a career focused on patient care and comfort.
“I love helping animals feel safe and supported.”
Samantha enjoys working with a group of people who support each other through the day. The team communicate well, steps in when needed and brings a sense of humour to the clinic. One moment stayed with her. A patient arrived late on a Friday and needed urgent surgery. Everyone moved quickly, each person taking on a task to get the theatre ready. Even the managers joined in to help where they could. Once the surgery was over, someone drew a smiley face on the practice manager’s apron, and the room filled with laughter. To Samantha, it showed exactly how the team balances pressure with genuine warmth.
When she is not at work, Samantha spends time with her granddaughters and looks after her veggie garden. She enjoys fishing on Western Port when the weather allows and has a lifelong love for Miniature Bull Terriers. Animals have always been part of her life, and that has never changed.
